For more than 300 years the Khoisan people of the Clanwilliam region of South Africa have been harvesting the leaves of wild Rooibos plants from the Cederberg mountain range and drying them in the sun to make an assortment of herbal remedies, treatments and a delicious tea. In the 18th century Dutch settlers in Cape Town began to brew and drink rooibos as an alternative to black tea which was expensive to import from Europe. It wasn't until 1930 that a botanist, Dr Nortier, reasearched the agricultural potential of the rooibos plant developing methods of cultivation and seed germination that have allowed farmers of the Cederberg to increase production.
